A Home in Harmony: Designed by Nature, Inspired by Spirit
For this Modern Biomimicry home design, we were commissioned to create a space deeply connected to the land, with a special focus on an area of energy that held significant meaning to the clients’ spiritual beliefs.
Two streams intersect and converge into a third in the middle of this property and true north aligned with the third stream. To site the home, we imposed the golden spiral over this third stream then scaled the size of the ratio until its outer back curve aligned naturally with the grade of the hillside. This is where we sited the home and what we took its form from.
The spiral became the inspiration for the home’s design. We blended crisp, modern lines with rounded, flowing curves throughout the home, and it all revolves around a courtyard that is open to the sky above. This courtyard, which is placed at the center point of the golden spiral, serves as a spiritual center for the homeowners, a place inside the home that allows them seamlessly to connect to the energy of the land around them. A tree is planted in the courtyard at the center point of the golden spiral and is a part of the architecture.
The home is formed concrete and incorporates materials that are simple earth materials, no engineered products are used in the materiality. The furnishings are a collection of boutique artisans who focus on zero emission organic products. The palate is soft and earthy. Skylights have been incorporated in specific locations to allow the light to reflect on specific elements within the home design activating the homes aesthetic with nature.
This creative process, guided by careful listening to the needs of both our clients and the land they cherish, has resulted in a unique design that reflects their personalities and style while also meeting their everyday functional needs.
