Designed From the Baby’s Point of View
“Baby Base”
For this nursery, the goal was to create a simple, warm, quiet sanctuary for both mother and baby. During the design process we developed a detail that I’ve started calling the “Baby Base” a slim, custom ledge set at baseboard height and designed, quite literally, from the baby’s point of view.
For now, it creates a low, accessible place for books, objects, and the little things that make up her world. It is intentionally quiet: integrated into the architecture rather than reading as another piece of furniture or traditional nursery storage.
What I love most, though, is what happens later.
As she grows, the ledge is discreet enough to remain while the room evolves around it. Upholstered panels could sit directly on it to create a headboard wall. Molding could grow upward from it. The detail could extend into deeper surfaces, display space, or more developed millwork as her needs and her style become more sophisticated.
It isn’t a nursery idea that will need to be removed when the nursery disappears.
It is a small architectural decision made now that gives us somewhere to go later.
That, to me, is luxury: not simply making something beautiful for this moment, but giving a room the ability to become something else beautifully.
